MISSION STATEMENT

To supply the global market with a simple solution to automatically lock the lids of trash cans when tipped over, keeping all trash locked inside.

THE SITUATION

The use of trashcans to accumulate trash and refuse is very typical in both residential and business settings. However, curious young children and pets often find ways into household trash bins leaving them vulnerable to potential dangers and creating a mess. This is why we created the Automatic Locking Mechanism to help address important and costly safety issues that far too often injure children and pets.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This auto lock system is designed to be easily integrated into existing trash bin designs which already feature a closing lid, allowing for expansion into safety lock trash can products. The trash can is unlocked when in a standing position. At the moment the can leaves its upright position, our automatic locking mechanism closes, and holds the lid shut.
 
When the trashcan is in an upright standing position, the spring arm rests against the floor and the weight of the can compresses the spring upward. This unlocks the trashcan for normal use.
 
At any point that the can leaves its upright standing position, the natural downward pressure of the spring pushes the spring arm down and out of the bottom of the can. As soon as the spring arm pushes past the bottom of the can, this triggers the locking mechanism to engage.
 
Once engaged, the locking mechanism causes the spring arm’s upper hook to connect with the hook on the bottom of the latch arm. The latch arm connects to the lid of the can, and as the spring arm pulls down on the latch arm, the lid is locked into place.
 
Once the can is returned to its upright position, the pressure on the spring arm pushes it back into the bottom of the can, and the spring arm releases it’s hold on the latch arm, allowing for normal use of the trash can to continue.

OBJECTIVES

The developers of the Automatic Locking Mechanism are offering to license the manufacturing and distribution rights to qualified organizations. These organizations should be capable of producing the product and/or accessing the appropriate markets with the product.

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY PROTECTION

The Automatic Locking Mechanism's patent is approved in the US and pending in Canada. Other territories are being considered on an as needed basis.
