EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

MISSION STATEMENT

To supply the global market with a simple solution to improve mobility for persons with Parkinson's disease, and more particularly to those who exhibit the Frozen Gait syndrome.

THE SITUATION

Many people with Parkinson’s disease experience what is called the frozen gait syndrome, in which the feet cannot be commanded to move. In the worst case, this can require a wheelchair for some mobility. The Barker Mobility Aid for frozen gait syndrome breaks the freeze by exploiting the well-known effect of strong visual clues by providing a deployable barrier mounted on a walking stick.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The Barker Mobility Aid for frozen gait syndrome deploys a barrier mounted on a walking stick. To deploy the barrier, the user pulls up the foot tab using the shoe. The barrier is released, and falls to the deployed position, and is retained by a metal stop bracket. By being forced to step over the barrier, the visual clue causes the freeze to break, and as long as the barrier is in use, walking is possible. The mobility aid has a safety feature, which is a flexible coupling between the barrier and the rotating shaft, avoiding any possibility of entanglement. To work at night, this aid has an ultraviolet eliminator. By pushing a switch, a beam of ultraviolet light shines on the fluorescent covering on the barrier. It glows with a green light. There are three illumination levels, selectable by repeated pushing of the switch. This method of illumination avoids affecting night vision. When the user does not need the aid, he can stow the barrier with a push of the foot on the protruding foot tab. The fluorescent covering of the barrier is replaceable when worn out. The ultraviolet illuminator uses rechargeable AAA lithium ion batteries. The illuminator is held on the walking stick by a strong magnet.
